Dance Styles

Go Dance teaches all the most popular styles of social dancing as well as traditional ballroom dances.  The following is a brief description of a wide variety of dance styles we teach in our group classes and private lessons.

There are some styles of dance that are not listed, which are generally taught only in private lessons.

If you would like more information on a style or level of dance, please feel free to contact us!

Class Levels

Go Dance offers up to 3 levels of group classes, depending on the dance. Our Level 1 classes are open to everyone. We want for everyone to enjoy dancing with their partners in class, so participation in Levels 2 and higher does require instructor approval. This way we know everyone is ready for the level of material that will be taught. Every studio has different class level structures - so if you have had previous instruction elsewhere, we encourage you to schedule a complimentary private introductory session with one of our instructors to see which of our levels will be the best fit for you.

Dance Shoes

Dancers should get dance shoes for the same reason soccer players wear cleats or football players wear pads. Dance shoes are specifically designed to support your feet and reduce the possibility of injury to ankles and knees.

Showcase

Summer Showcase 2012 - Sunday, June 24th

This summer, we are hosting our 28th semi-annual Showcase performance on Sunday, June 24th. This is your chance to be in the show and make your dance dreams come true... whether you’re a beginning, intermediate, or advanced dancer. All proceeds benefit Lifeworks.

There are three ways to perform:

  1. Spotlight Routines - Dance with your instructor or another student in a solo routine choreographed just for you.
  2. Freestyle Routines - Demonstrate a dance style with your instructor or another student with other couples on the floor.
  3. Team Routines - Join a group of fellow students to dance a specially choreographed routine as a team.

Spotlight Performances - Summer 2012

There's nothing more challenging ~ or more rewarding ~ than doing a "Spotlight" performance. It's just the two of you, in the spotlight, commanding the attention of the entire audience. You pick the music and dance a unique routine choreographed just for you.

If you've always dreamed of being on "Dancing with the Stars," this is your chance to experience your dream. It will be your moment in the spotlight!

Spotlight routine slots are limited. For more information, or to reserve your spotlight ask your instructor to schedule a meeting for you with our showcase coordinator.

Spotlight routine packages are custom designed for each individual and typically range from $1800 to $3000 depending on the complexity of the choreography and number of lessons included in the package.

Freestyle Performances for Summer 2012

Each Freestyle requires 4 couples enrolled to make. Freestyles in additional dances may be added, so if you have your heart set on doing a Freestyle not listed below let the front desk know and we'll see if we can make it happen!

Bachata
Cha Cha
Foxtrot
Hustle
Two Step
West Coast Swing

195.00 performance fee per dance. (Payment plan available, $95 at enrollment, $50 at the beginning of April and May.) Private Lessons, Coaching Sessions and your costume are not included in the performance fee. A minimum of 8-12 Private Lessons and 1-2 Coaching Sessions are recommended to prepare for your Freestyle.

Team Performances for Summer 2012

Welcome to the Go Dance Blog!

Hello Go Dance Community! This is Bridget Ellis, a Go Dance instructor and now Go Dance Blogger, who is excited to bring a new feature to you, our Go Dancers! I hope to provide helpful insight about my own journey with dance as well as the other Go Dance instructors, visiting professionals, and your fellow students. I encourage you to send me questions, comments, and feedback. I want to enable you to be a part of this experience! Challenge me, joke with me, and enjoy the art of creating while being a part of our community. So, let's get to it!

Upcoming Dance Competitions

If you want to take your dancing to the next level and start competing, there are oodles of competitions in just about any genre you want. We actually have students and staff at Go Dance who are competing over the next two weekends. This weekend, November 10th-13th, is the Dallas Dance Festival. Richard Dugger and his students Katie Powers, Sherry Roberts, and Madhu Kumaraswamy are competing. Also, Gary McIntyre will be teaching several awesome workshops for some lucky dancers. For more competition information, follow this link.

Relying on Your Strengths

Why is it that we spend so many hours, days, years of our lives trying so hard to improve what we do wrong? So much of our focus and energy expenditure is on improving our weaknesses. Yes, we do need to address them, but do they have to be everything? Do we have to define ourselves by what we don't do, or could we shift perspective and start talking about what we all do well? We all do certain things really well. There are some dancers who are amazing spinners, some hear and interpret music effortlessly and can make their body express the music in ways we can only dream, while others can understand and execute technique like it's nothing. The point being is that we all have "our thing" that we are good at. Some days it may be difficult to find that thing, but other days it just flows.

Dance Video - Jordan Frisbee & Tatiana Mollmann

Here is an awesome West Coast Swing routine by the never disappointing Jordan Frisbee and Tatiana Mollmann. They've come to Go Dance before for workshops, performances, and private lessons. They are coming again in 2012, so don't miss it! Until then, watch this video and appreciate the skill, grace, musicality, and expression in their movements as they bring this song to life.
